domain name and web hosting help please?

I registered a domain from godaddy, but found the hosting to be a bit expensive, shopped around and found that I would like to host with Ipage. So signed up for a hosting plan, and then I thought I could just transfer the domain. Apparently I have to wait for the domain to be 60 days old?? So what should I do, I need this done withing 2 weeks for my final project for college. Should I get a refund from Ipage and have to host with godaddy?

Chosen Answer:

It’s not a problem. You don’t have to transfer your domain name at all, if you don’t want to.

In order to use your iPage hosting while your domain is still at Godaddy (without transferring your domain at least until it’s 60 days old) all you have to do is to point your domain name to your web hosting. You can do this in just a few minutes and it is usually set up and ready within 24 hours (usually a lot less). All you need to do is log in to your Godaddy domain control panel and enter the iPage name servers
ns1.ipage.com
ns2.ipage.com

If you’ve already added that website (domain name) to your iPage control panel, and uploaded the files to your hosting account, the website will be live in a couple of minutes or hours.

If you own the domain just go into your control panel and change the DNS nameservers so they point to Ipage’s nameserver. If you don’t know how to do this just contact Ipage’s support and they should tell you how to do it.

Don’t transfer the domain even if a web host offers a free domain name for life. I personally prefer to keep domain name and web hosting separate from each other. That way you are not held hostage by a web host in case there are problems.

When you opened your web hosting account you must have gotten so-called DNS server information. Go into the domain management at Godaddy and your DNS servers to the ones provided by your web host. It might take a little while until the information is current on the Internet so that you can see your website. You might have to clear the local cache on your machine and your Internet router.

On your local machine you can open a command line prompt and type: ipconfig /flushDNS
Your router probably needs to be rebooted.

Godaddy is a good place to register domain names but many people have some problems with their web hosting services.

Don’t choose godaddy because of http://www.nodaddy.com

You don’t need to transfer your domain to your new web host. You can keep it with godaddy and just set your domain DNS on your web hosting DNS.

The cheapest reliable web hosting service is available at:

You don’t need to get a refund. You can just point your domain to your web hosting by taking the following steps:

    1. Find out your web host’s name servers. These are a pair of Internet addresses, e.g., ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com. Usually these can be found in your control panel.

    2. Go to your GoDaddy account and edit the name servers. Input the addresses you found in step 1. Wait a few hours while the new addresses propagate, and there you go! You can use your registered domain with your hosting account.
