I have iPage now, but my like tech savvy 18 year old assistant left behind a few icon mistakes and the page doesn’t appear if you are using IE. So I went in, since I used to build website about 7 years ago and basically it is too complex because I am too busy for complexity. I want to build a website for a small restaurant, should i go for a free web host or a paid one?

This is going to be the first website I build, I am looking for a web hosting that is easy to use, professional looking, would a free web host does all the above? On the other hand, I have also been looking into paid web host like ipage, it seems to offer a lot of features, including marketing credits, but I am not sure if that is necessary given that it is just a restaurant site.

WordPress.org blog via ipage on a mac? Help please?

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to start my own website-yay!
I had no idea, however, that it would be so confusing! First I went to wordpress.org, and they told me that I needed web hosting, so I set up an account with ipage.com that gives me unlimited hosting and a free domain. I made my domain, http://www.popfrock.com/ (it’s going to be a fashion design portfolio of sorts) …so far so good right? Then I got confused. Trying to follow wordpress instructions for windows is kind of out of my league…I got that I need to have a FTP client so I downloaded Cyberduck and later, at the instruction of a youtube video, a free trial of Fetch. I installed wordpress from ipage.com and made an FTP login, and got into the administrative dashboard of popfrock.com. I also (thanks youtube!) installed a theme by downloading it and then dragging the little folder into the “themes” folder once I logged into Fetch. Then I went to my wordpress dashboard thing and typed in a quickie test post. Have I done okay so far?
Problem is, if you visit the website you’ll see that it says it’s under construction. How do I get what I do (posts, theme change, etc) to show up on the site?

SL, I haven’t put anything into FTP (that’s Fetch, right?) except my “theme” folder. Was there something else I was supposed to put in? My admin page on WordPress is http://www.popfrock.com/wp-admin/index.php.
Yes, the wordpress address and site address both show up as http://popfrock.com. I changed the theme via the appearance menu to my downloaded theme. What in the world did I do…?

I’ve heard a few popular ones such as ipage, hostgator and justhost but am unsure about the reliability of the “top 10″ lists im finding online cause i know most of them just get paid to be on those kind of lists

What should my ipage Nameservers be?

I made a website and registered the domain on ipage.com. When signing up for Google Adsense I read that i needed to change the nameservers in order for it to qualify. I then went to the Ipage.com Control Panel and changed the nameservers to the one prompted by Google. Then when I went onto my website URL it said “Not Found”. I then changed my nameservers back to ns1.ipage.com and ns2.ipage.com. After 2 days i checked back and it said Page Not Found. What should my nameservers be??? Please help. Thanks

I’m using both iPage and Bluehost. I don’t want to compare them as both are equally good for my requirements. For a new web hosting server, I suggest you to check with Web Hosting Break web hosting reviews. The recommendations are fairly reasonable and found them helpful.

I’m thinking of purchasing web hosting at a website called http://buzzhosting.org , my first impressions are pretty good however have any of you used this before?

I am not wanting to host with Hostgator, iPage, Justhost, 123-reg nor 1&1 I’m pretty keen on hosting with Buzzhosting…

Would you advise that I use this company?

While I have never used or even heard of this webhosting company before, I visited the “Packages” page of their website, and it seems like their plans are pretty good, with the company offering a variety of different features, such as the ability to use MySQL databases, etc.

It also appears as though BuzzHosting has a trial plan, which you can pre-pay for a euro, so perhaps you could do this before you decide to purchase a hosting plan, so that you can see how you like their hosting service and if the features work for you.

There is also an option to have a live chat with a representative of the company, if you have any questions regarding the service.

Before you do decide to try this service, though, I would suggest that you do a search for some user reviews of this company, just to get an idea of what others, who have used this hosting provider before, think of the company and the features available.

I have used GoDaddy’s WordPress hosting before, though, and they were pretty good, if you are looking at trying any other hosts or looking into others.

How to upload files to a domain?

How to run PHP files through a web host (iPage)?

I know that if you have your own server for your website and you wish to make your website dynamic, you must download PHP, MySql, etc, etc…. But my website is ran through iPage webhosting. I know that their servers support PHP and Sql. If I send a PHP file to my iPage server, will it process data and everything and retrieve and store data from the database on the server (MySql)?? Am I lost? Are there codes/scripts and such for how to have the PHP file automatically send and get data from the database and send it back to the client via HTTP?

Hey David,

Although I too would suggest going to a different host, I’ll give you a little test to see if php is properly configured to run on the ipage system. Keep in mind that although it maybe configured to process php files, that DOES NOT mean that it will run each and every module/extension for php. Some servers do not load some extensions for security or server load issues. If ipages is running php, you need to make sure that it is running the module you wish to use. Any tutorial on the module, should also contain some advice on how to check for this.

Anyways, to test if your ipage server is running/processing php, open up notepad, or whatever. NOT A WORD PROCESSOR.

Copy and Past:

Then save the file as test.php
Then upload it to your ipages server. Navigate to it with your browser. http://yoursite.com/test.php or wherever you uploaded it to.

The page should output a whole table of information. If you see a table of information, then php is enabled and running. Also this table will tell you the individual modules/extensions loaded. I wouldn’t get too bogged down in reading the page if you do not know what the information is telling you.

Next, google some “beginner php tutorial” and have fun learning some PHP.

Lastly, I would suggest going over to a new host. Although there are several options to choose from, I have always liked JustHost hosting services. There have been around for over 6 years, so you know there not going anywhere. Their customer service is prompt and accurate. Their servers are fast and reliable.
