I think the title is something like Letters from Stendhal (Stendhal is probably not the correct city but it did begin with an “s”).
In World War II 39 men (some scientists, mostly soldiers) were left to die and they got the chance to write one letter and have it mailed on the last plane out of wherever they were stationed. They knew they were going to die and that they were abandoned.
I’ve tried searches on google, amazon, and ingram ipage but nothing has come up.
